Designing Place-Based Identity

Al Ain Oasis
Case Study

Course: Graphic Design Synthesis, MFA in Information Design & Data Visualization
Instructor: Douglass Scott
Semester: Fall 2023

Project Description:
In this semester-long synthesis project, I developed a comprehensive visual identity and communications system for Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the United Arab Emirates. The site is known for its extensive network of traditional falaj irrigation systems and its cultivation of more than 147,000 date palms over 136 hectares. This project sought to position Al Ain as a model of cultural preservation and accessible heritage communication through a multilingual, multi-platform branding system.

The design process focused on translating historical, environmental, and spatial characteristics of the oasis into a cohesive identity system that could serve educational, touristic, and civic engagement goals. Outputs included visual identity assets, exhibition collateral, accessibility-focused signage prototypes, event branding, and strategic visitor engagement proposals.
